As the name suggests, chrysanthemum stones are stones that have a pattern resembling a chrysanthemum flower.
Radiating patterns found within lumps of basalt and other rocks resemble chrysanthemum flowers, and they have become objects of appreciation for their resemblance. Since then, they have been treated as the "pinnacle of stones" in the world of ornamental stones, which began around the Kamakura period.
Among all the chrysanthemum stones, the "Neodani chrysanthemum stones" are said to be the best.
Due to its geological importance, the area where chrysanthemum stones are produced, designated as 48-9 and 10 Hatsushikadani, Neomatsuda, Motosu City, Gifu Prefecture (near the Neodani fault, approximately 1,430a), was designated a national natural monument in 1941 (Showa 16) and a special natural monument in 1952 (Showa 27). Collection in this area is strictly prohibited.
